I have never understood the antipathy and dislike that otherwise rational people have for lifestyle business.

The heart of the issue is this question: what constitutes business success? I guess for some it’s size; others  have other measures. In an age of growing awareness of carbon footprint, in a time when the fastest growing businesses are social enterprises, at a point in the economic cycle when we need to drive entrepreneurs to help solve social issues we need all types of businesses and a virtually all will start in small way and be dictated in shape and plan by the creator.

Business should not be measured by the number of people it employs. Over and over I hear people talk about the size of their organisations. All I hear is the cost of their payroll. Is this just a man thing? Are we really comparing size still as adults? Get over it. In business size doesn’t matter; it’s what it brings to your life.

Reflect on the initial question: what do people have against lifestyle businesses? A lifestyle business is simply one where the owner seeks to make the business successful not only in terms of profitability but also in terms of its ability to make his or her life more successful. It is this intentional inclusion of other measures of success that also define a social enterprise. It is exactly this awareness of the impact on the environment that defines the green enterprise.

I believe that people should build businesses around their passions and around their lives. I believe that some businesses deserve to grow to fully express themselves or contribute to society. But other businesses should remain small and focussed.

I know many people who these days don’t work to create a mammoth business but do work to create lifestyle; me too.

What types of franchises traditionally are more solid during a recession?

Let’s face it, the mere word “recession” strikes fear into many people, because it implies hardship, job loss, and therefore, loss of income. So, in times of recession, those without jobs, but with the economic means, will seek to replace routine employment with self-employment. This is a common scenario found in each and every economic downturn.

Now franchise consultants, at least those with true knowledge of the industry, will normally always advise in favor of purchasing a franchise opportunity that best fits the buyer, but what if funds are not available; what if that perfect business is in recession’?

Logic dictates that ‘you do what you have to do’, and often that means buying the ‘best buinesss you can afford; that isn’t in a recession and is available’.

Sorry to be so blunt about it, but many entrepreneurs have been born out of hardship and the trouble with most advisers is that most are not in business themselves. What’s the point of going to a bank manager who has a job and asking about a business – he doesn’t know because he has a job! Bit getting financial advice from someone with no money; mind you some people do that too.

The bottom line is this: if a ‘quality’ franchise investment represents a means to create a new found lifestyle, then the option is positive. Those who want that solidity go here.

Up to the early 1980s, the availability of care tended to be mainly residential based, either in residential or nursing homes, albeit with some additional provision of state funded home-helps. In fact, 98 per cent of all institutional care was provided by the state. However, in 1984 compulsory registration of independently owned residential homes was introduced and during the next nine years, there was an enormous upsurge in the numbers of independent operators providing residential care for mainly older people. These were boom times for operators of private rest homes and the vast majority of these homes provided a safe, secure and caring environment for older people who had been struggling to cope for themselves in their own homes. All this changed with the passing of the NHS and Community Care Act in 1990.

This Community Care Act represented the most drastic changes to the way care had ever been provided before. Delayed for two years, in April 1993 the act was finally implemented in England and Wales, having initially been introduced to Scotland. The main consequences of this act were that the budgets held by the DSS to fund residential care were to be diverted to local authorities’ Social Services departments and anyone who felt that they required care and funding for that care would now need to apply for assessment by their local Social Services.

This system has now been in place for 13 years and the result of the majority of these assessments is that individuals can remain living in their own homes with care workers visiting them and providing appropriate in-home care and support. Of course, this has enormous cost saving benefits to the economy but more importantly, it allows people to retain a great deal more independence living in the familiar surroundings of their own homes.

The other major development in 1993 was the move by Social Services departments to purchase more and more community-based care from the independent sector whose costs were significantly lower, rather than to be providers of care services themselves. Hence, a new market started to develop in 1993 – the domiciliary care market.

The market today is enormous, estimated to be worth £12-£17 billion per annum! There are now around 4,500 independent operators in the UK with Social Services currently purchasing 70 per cent of their community based care from these new independent sector operators. 

In 2003 the Care Standards Act was introduced, requiring compulsory registration for all care providers and thereafter regular inspections from an independent organisation, the Commission for Social Care Inspection. This was a move welcomed by professional operators and has resulted in less committed/able operators withdrawing from the market. Domiciliary Care now has the professional status it has sought, and indeed yearned for.

The marketplace for elderly care continues to grow robustly; that fact and the continued greater importance placed by the authorities on quality care within the sector the benefits franchising this type of business are numerous.
